Our service is aimed primarily at asylum seekers awaiting status and refugees sponsored during their first year in Canada who are covered by the Interim Federal Health Program (IFHP).

1

Reference

Once you have verified your eligibility, you must provide these three (3) documents to RIVO:

1) the completed RIVO referral form (HERE),
2) a medical prescription for psychotherapy (dated and manually signed by the doctor or IPS and that indicates your diagnosis and symptoms), and
3) a copy of the asylum seeker’s document (brown paper).

2

Psychosocial Interventions

One of our social workers will contact you to assess and prioritize your request for psychotherapy. They will also refer you (and your family) to RIVO and other community and institutional resources, according to your needs.

3

Psychotherapy

We will then pair you with our next available therapist. We initially offer 10 sessions of psychotherapy, to which may be added a further 10 sessions if needed – a new medical prescription is then required.

NB: Being paired with a psychotherapist can take months, depending on factors such as volume of requests received, urgent situations, and the availability of our psychologists. We are working hard to reduce wait times.
